In politics, there is always one winner and many losers per any elective seat. Luhyas are the third highest populated ethnic group in Kenya after the Kikuyus and Kalenjins. The Kikuyus and Kalenjins have used the large numbers to their advantage ensuring that they are in government after every general election.Luhyas on the other hand have been in the opposition for most part of Kenya's existence. The only time they got in government was back in 2002 when Kibaki won the elections and appointed Kijana Wamalwa as his vice president.Wamalwa died two years later and Luhyas were once again out. They have not benefited a lot from the Jomo Kenyatta,Moi,Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta administrations. However under the newly elected president William Ruto, things are looking good for them.Barely one month after being elected,Ruto has ensured that the Luhya nation political kingpins Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi are in government.Wetangula having brought majority of Luhya votes to Ruto was on Thursday chosen as the national assembly speaker. He is now the third in command after the president and his deputy president. As for Musalia Mudavadi,he is set to be appointed as the Chief minister responsible for overseeing all ministerial activities of the government. The fact that the two are in government and close to the president, most resources will head to Western Kenya in the next five years. This is something the Luhyas are not used to,some have even never seen.
