Murithi was the former director of personnel at police headquarters in the country. According to reports, Murithi died at the Kenyatta Hospital due to cancer-related complications.

Massa Hamisi Salim has been appointed by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) as the acting director of criminal investigation (DCI). Following George Kinoti's departure as the DCI leader, Senior Assistant Inspector General (SAIG) Massa Hamisi was appointed. The National Police Service Commission stated in a statement that Hamisi will hold the job until a substantive and competitive replacement is found in at least 14 days.
