10,000 Cattle Targeted in Sh30 Million Slaughter Destocking, Commercial Offtake Program in Lamu

User At least 10,000 livestock, mostly cattle are targeted in a Sh30 million slaughter destocking and commercial livestock offtake program intended to be implemented this month. The move is a relief for pastoralists, particularly those from drought-stricken areas of Lamu. The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) announced the plan to undertake both the destocking slaughter and commercial offtake program for the livestock in the county early this month of October.

More than 160,000 people Marsabit county have been affected by the ongoing drought. According to the Marsabit county commissioner ,Mr.Paul Rotich, the level of drought has increased dramatically in the county. Speaking at the launch of the national government's livestock oftaking exercise in the Maikona area of North Horr constituency, Rotich said that the biggest challenge was the lack of adequate water and food for both human and livestock.

Water and Irrigation CEC Hon. Abdi Omar today called for concerted efforts to mitigate on ravaging drought in Garissa County. Hon. Omar chaired a consultative meeting to deliberate on mitigation measures and response over persistent drought that had adversely affected communities and livestock. He said the drought was worsening by day and called on state and non-state actors under the Water and Sanitation and Health (WASH) to pool together and come up with better response and mitigation mechanisms.
