One of East Africa's most respected religious leaders, Otunga belonged to just a select number of men who would meet in a closed-door session known as the conclave upon the death of a reigning pope, or titular head of the Roman Catholic Church, to choose a new leader from amongst themselves.

The retired Archbishop of Roman Catholic Arch diocese of Nairobi, Raphael Ndingi Mwana a' Nzeki, has been reported dead early this morning at the age of 88 years. Archbishop Emeritus Raphael S. Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki served as Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi from 21st April 1997 to 6tg October 2007,when he attained the age of 75.
