The government through the Ministry of Transport has issued tough rules to the Taxi industry aiming to curb the state of unruliness in the industry. Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, stated that Taxi drivers who take longer routes in order to unfairly increase their charges, face a Ksh20,000 fine or six months in jail or both.
Before Corona Virus outbreak, Matatu sector had a turnover of about Ksh400 billion per annum. However, as result of the pandemic, the amount has greatly decreased. According to data obtained from National Transport and Safety Authority, there over 700 Saccos in Kenya serving over 80,000 vehicles.
