Human beings get infected when the larval forms of the worms are released from freshwater snails and penetrate the skin when one is swimming or during farming activities.

Over 100 Children in Boni Forest Suffer From Diarrhea, Bilharzia

User Diarrhea,bilharzia and skin disease outbreak has been reported amongst children in the five villages found in Boni Forest in Lamu County. The villages where more than 100 children have been affected by the diseases include Kiangwe, Basuba, Mangai and Milimani. The diseases are believed to be majorly contributed by consumption of dirty water by the locals especially since the drought season began.

The ministry of health in conjunction with WHO, administers drugs to curb the spread of Bilharzia.

Bilharzia is one of the deadliest diseases water-born diseases followed by intestinal worms. The disease occurs mainly in watery areas such as the western part of Kenya. The areas mainly affected now are Vihaga, Bungoma, Kakamega, and trans-nzoia county. The ministry of health started a mass drug administration and sensitization program in western Kenya targeted 5 million people and 1.5 million at sabatia in Vihiga county which the mass was officially launched to curb the spread of bilharzia.
