Nakuru is the main town in Nakuru County, and a great economic hub in this region. With almost 70% of Kenyan horticulture products coming from this region, and a tourist destination due to Lake Nakuru, This makes an airport a very necessary project.
Nakuru town is among the largest towns in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. On the recent years Nakuru has been strongly aiming to achieve city status, by improving of it's infrastructure to meet the required standards.
Well the project am highlighting today is the long awaited NAKURU AIRPORT currently known as Lanet millitary airstrip.
It will cost about 3 billion Kenyan shillings to upgrade the current Lanet millitary airstrip to a full blown international airport.
It will be constructed in phases, with phase one will consist of; 1.7km runway, a terminal building, taxi ways, firefighting building, substation, a military lounge, exit and entrance gates and a security fence.
Phase two involves expansion of the 1.7km runway to a length of 3.6km to allow landing of larger aircrafts.
The airport is expected to serve both the millitary and civilians.
Upon completion it will definitely boost the Nakuru economy, in terms of flower exportation, tourism and just investment in general.
The construction has already started as Governor of Nakuru Lee Kinyanjui was present to intitiate the ground breaking ceremony.
