Tambo airport is the largest and busiest airport in Africa.It is located in Kempton park,Gauteng, in South Africa.The airport was founded in 1952 as Jan Smut international airport.It replaced Palmietfontein international airport which handled European flights since 1945.

Tambo airport has been receiving over 21 million people annually.It has a capacity to handle upto 28 million people yearly.It serves as the primary airport for domestic and international travel in South Africa.The airport also hubs the South African airways.This airport was the first in Africa to host the Airbus A30 in 2006.

The airport is situated 1700meters above the sea level where the air is thin.The thinner air is the reason why the airport has longer than usual runways.This airport has two parallel runways that are adjacent to the airport terminal buildings.The runways are equipped with approach lighting system.

The south African airways headquarters are located in this airport.There is also a well developed railway transport system that transports passengers to the airport.
