Properties worth millions were on Wednesday reduced to ashes after a huge fire razed down three tourism resorts in WatamuKilifi county.
Several tourists were injured as they tried to escape from the fire which allegedly began in Mbuyu lodge before spreading to the nearby hotels. The fire was caused by an electrical fault in the Mbuyu hotel.
Residents and tourism stakeholders now want the government to improve firefighting services in the county for faster actions in case of fire outbreaks.
"Unfortunately the wind was blowing very strong in all directions and we didn't get any chance to fight the fire We did our level best to fight the fire but unfortunately the fire was stronger and faster than us," one of the firefighters said.
However, the fire caused serious financial implications for many people living in Watamu as well as the local economy.
