When you are in a plane, before takeoff and shortly before landing, the flight attendants ask the passengers to switch their electronic devices to flight mode. But everyone complies because we just don’t understand how our small smartphones can interfere with the operation of a high-tech aircraft.
Today I have a collection of facts that shows how important that is, switching your phone to a flight mode
What is the flight mode for?
When in flight mode, your gadget disables all data services (WI-FI, Bluetooth, etc.).Simply put, your phone or tablet ceases to function as a radio receiver, if your phone has not been switched to flight mode, then the signal emanating from it may interfere with highly sensitive electronic devices of the aircraft.
What if you don’t use your phone?
When the smartphone is just locked and you are not using it, it is still searching for a network, and its frequency may overlap with the frequency of aircraft devices. Even those sleeping gadgets pose threats, just switch to flight mode.
Why is such phone activity dangerous?
Takeoff and landing are the most difficult stages of the flight, in this stages the pilot needs to coordinate their actions with the flight control center on the ground. Which is done using the aircraft’s navigation system, the signals of gadgets can interfere in the radio communication and the pilot might not hear information transmitted by the traffic controller, this might lead to an emergency situation.
Which electronic devices may I use on a plane?
During the whole flight you may use any device which don’t exchange data through GSM, WI-FI or Bluetooth. For instance, watches but not electronic ones, cameras, videos cameras, voice recorder and hearing aids. This devices may be used at all stages of the flight, but make sure they are in flight mode which include smart phones and smartwatches, tablets, e-books, digital audio/video players and laptops.
Flight mode can be turned off only during the flight stage, a few minutes after takeoff and only after a message from the flight crew.
Note that a couple of working phones won’t crash a plane, but if everyone onboard is using their gadgets, the interference will be noticeable.
Perhaps taking precautions is very advisable, let’s appreciate the work of others and not create unnecessary difficulties for pilots, after all it just takes a few seconds to switch your phone to flight mode.
