East Africa Country Which is The Only African Nation to Produce a Smartphone (PHOTOS)

A Rwandan company called Mara Group just released two new smartphones — the Mara X and the pricier Mara Z — which are the first ever to be manufactured entirely in Africa and Located in Kigali’s special economic zone, 

The Mara X is priced at $159 and features a 5.5-inch HD+ display offering a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. It sports a 3MP rear and 5MP front camera, and comes with 16GB of internal memory and 1GB RAM. The higher-end Mara Z costs $229 and offers a 5.7-inch ultra-HD display, a 13MP camera front and rear, and 32GB of storage and 3GB RAM. Both run Android.

Mara Group’s smartphones will compete with Samsung, a dominant player in the African market, along with non-branded phones, which also have a large presence in the continent.Mara Phones was designed in partnership with Google as part of the Android One Program.The new factory currently makes two versions of the phone priced between $129 and $189.

To enhance and enrich underserved populations in Africa and beyond, Rwandan-based Mara Phones produces high-quality, affordable smartphones designed to promote digital inclusion. Mara Phones is a subsidiary of Mara Group, a dynamic African group with operations in the banking, technology, real estate and infrastructure fields founded in 1996 by Ashish Thakkar.

The factory employs about 200 people in Rwanda -- 60% of whom are women.The bulk of the market is characterised by feature phones which use USSD technology to access digital services; a general trend across the continent.
