Lionel Messi has today come out to reinforce the Stop Online Abuse call among his fans. The Argentina international striker appreciated the move by the UK football family, and sports organizations to boycott the social media for the whole of this weekend. Lionel Messi has 200 million followers on Instagram. The football superstar says his 200 million followers should signify 200M reasons to make social media a respectful place and a free platform for everyone to express themselves without insults.
The Barcelona star says he cannot pretend to celebrate having 200 million followers on Instagram while someone is suffering behind their profiles. Messi says it is upon us to condemn such hostile attitudes and call upon the network managers to take action.
He has joined top football stars like Wayne Rooney in supporting the move by the UK football family. It will now be up on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to take action against racism.
