As the world mouns the demise of the legendary football player Pele, Kenyans have been reminded of when he visited the country in 1976. An old report from 1976 documented by the Nation Newspaper has revealed that Pele was embarrassed by Kenyans on his tour to Kenya as they did not support his goodwill to help Kenyan players.
Pele during his visit offered to train the national team but the KFF which was in charge of football activities failed to support him. Reports have it that the national team failed to attend Pele's youth football clinic during his visit. He instead trained the Starehe Boys Centre Students before he left for Uganda. Kenyans blamed Kenneth Matiba the then chairman of the KFF for failing the National team.
This story has left many Kenyans heartbroken since Pele was a legend who could have helped the national team a lot. Now that he is no longer with us people feel pity for the national team of the time. Below are some of the reactions Kenyans gave on Facebook;
"Matiba was bad for football. He tried to kill Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards during his stint. He only wanted Kenya Breweries (now Tusker) to succeed. Bure kabisa on footballing front." Charles.
"Dynasties used to control everything during Jomos reign.maybe walitaka kakitu from Pepsi," Kaburu.
