Top Footballers Who Never Played For An Academy

Today, it is quite shocking for modern footballers not to pass through a football academy before being promoted to the senior team. Most footballers are academy graduates from one of the numerous football clubs. Today, we are going to discuss about 7 players who never set foot in an academy.

Miroslav Klose

The German International won the World Cup golden boot in 2006 is one of the most lethal strikers the world has ever seen. His prowess in knowing exactly where to position himself and when to shoot, enabled his country to win the World Cup trophy in 2014. The German goal scoring machine achieved all these without attending a football academy.

Klose started his career at SG Blaubach-Diedelkopf and later moved to FC Kaiserslauten and that's where he thrived as a footballer!

Didier Drogba

One of the greatest strikers of all time in Africa. Drogba, was well known from his shooting power and the ability to use both feet and head, won almost everything with Chelsea. The Ivory Coast legend football was unlucky to find an academy.

He started his football career at Levallios, a French amateur team then earned a spot in Le Mans and that's when he flourished.

Jay-Jay Okocha

The Nigerian legend is one of the few footballers who are skillful and talented. The former Super Eagles captain just started playing street football in Enugu state. Okocha was spotted by a local football club, Enugu Rangers.

He attracted attention from German lower league clubs but he still opted to stay with Enugu Rangers until he made his debut with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Ian Wright

The former England footballer never set his foot in any academy. He just made it through the hard way. The Arsenal legend played for a Sunday amateur league before a semi-professional club, Greenwhich Borough.

He later signed for Crystal Palace which became the leeway to Arsenal and the rest is history.

Luca Toni

Toni won the 2006 World Cup winner with the Italian National team and he only started as local footballer at a lower division side, Modena. This was the staircase to Fiorentina, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

Carlos Bacca

The Colombian International footballer made it to the top professional football world without joining any football academy. He began his career in 2006 playing for Atletico Junior when he was 20 years old. He also used work as a bus-driver assistant as his side-hustle.

After Atletico, he was sent to Barranquilla on loan, later moved to Venezuelan league side, Minervan on loan. Bacca returned back to Mineiro and later attracted the Belgian side, Club Brugge and the rest is history.

Jamie Vardy

The Leicester City legend had a long way until he made it to the top league division. Vardy spent three seasons with Stocksbridge Parksteels, Halifax Town, Fleetwood Town and eventually, made his debut with Leicester City.

Vardy won the EPL Golden boot with Leicester City in 2019-20 bagging in 23 goals in 35 appearances.
