The Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury that keeps football players away for 6 months

Football is one of the best sports in the world, if its not the best. But to me, football is such a great and entertaining game that I sometime wonder how the inventors of this came about the idea. That is because this game itself is such that it pulls a large crowd in various stadiums, arguably the the most followed sport.

This is such a beautiful game but unfortunately, this game has its ups and downs. In that case therefore, let me delve into one issue, that is about injuries sustained in this sport. Which I'll today focus on one. Most probably you've heard of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear. The one that keeps players out for such a long time.

So, Anterior cruciate ligament is one of the major ligaments in the knee that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. It is responsible for stabilizing rotational movements at the knee that occur during cutting or pivoting activities. So the injury or 'tear' on the tissue is caused by activities that causes stress on the knee untill the ligament tears.

It can either be a sudden slow down, sudden change in direction(cutting) and landing awkwardly in a jump. ACL tear cannot heal on itself because it requires a surgery to reconstruct it. And it takes quite a long time tp fully heal. It is because the ligaments are poorly vascularized, meaning there aren't many blood vessels to provide nutrients for the ligament to repair.

The surgery entails an incision to remove a tendon if one is undergoing an autograft, whereby a tendon from another part of your body is inserted in your knee to join the thigh bone and shin bone. It takes about 6 to 9 months to recover from it. Because once after a successful surgery, there is physical therapy to return strength to the knee.

Recently Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk suffered the injury and will be in the sidelines for long. Now, I hope you have a rough idea of what the Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear/injury is all about, if you want to know any other injury, kindly mention in the comment section so that i can give you a quick review.
