It's the end of the road for Qatar after Netherlands and Ecuador shared the spoils tonight. Cody Gakpo and Enner Valencia were the heroes for their nations as they each bagged a goal. The former put Netherlands ahead in the first half while the latter drew things level in the second half.
Al-Annabi are already counted out of the world cup since mathematically, they cannot progress past their group.
The draw puts Netherlands and Ecuador as joint group leaders with 4 points and each having a goal difference of +2.
And earlier today, Senegal won 3-1 against Qatar, making the hosts to remain pointless and sinking their goal difference further to -4.
This disastrous run means that Qatar replaces South Africa as the host to get the earliest elimination.
South Africa previously held this bad record after coming agonisingly short of the knockout stages in the 2010 world cup due to goal difference. They finished third in their group but level on points with second place Mexico.
Having nothing to play for, Qatar will most likely let Netherlands defeat them. But most Africans will be rooting for Qatar to at least pick up a draw so that Senegal can stand a better chance of progressing to the round of 16.
