Why England might defeat Iran in their first World cup match

The FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. The current champions are France, who won their second title at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

This years edition kicked off in Qatar yesterday with host Qatar being beaten by Ecuador.

Today the three lions (England) will play against Iran in group B first match.

The match will kick off at 4pm live from Khalifa international stadium (Doha)

England have not won a single match in their last six encounters, drawing thrice and losing thrice.

What gives England an upper hand is their recent performance in big trophies.

They reached the semifinals in the last word cup losing to Croatia.

Harry Kane finished as the top scorer in the 2018 edition which gives England an upper hand.

On the other hand Iran have appeared in the FIFA World Cup on six occasions: in 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022. They never managed to get through the group stage.

They have only won two of their 15 total matches. Iran is one of 20 teams to feature at the last two World Cups and one of the teams had the fewest shots (47), fewest shots on target (10), and scored the fewest goals (three).
