Georgian Messi
This guy from the small country of Georgia has been absolutely sensational since his 10-million-pound move from current Georgian champions Dinamo to Italian giants Napoli. The 21-year-old Georgian has made an explosive start to life in Naples and has already caused damage to some of European heavyweights. Case in point being last season’s beaten finalists and six-time European champions Liverpool who were beaten by four goals to one in Naples.
Following the start of Russia’s attack of Ukraine since early February, the Georgian star just like many other foreign players was forced to look for alternative clubs. This was due to the fact that Russian clubs were banned from competing in the prestigious European competitions, the Champions League being one of them. FIFA ruled that foreign players in Russia were free to break their contracts after the invasion of Ukraine. So, he had to leave Russian club Rubin Kazan in March of 2022 and joined Dinamo. His talents eventually made his move to Napoli possible.
So far so good in that respect. Italian giants Napoli may have started the season with many uncertainties following the departures of captain Lorenzo Insigne to major league soccer in the United States, the vice-captain to Chelsea and Dries who is the club’s record goal scorer. But the Georgian stars impact and the reputation of the club’s central striker from Nigeria has settled the dust at the club. Napoli paid 10 million pounds and the deal looked to be a feather in the cap for Cristiano, the club’s sporting director.
The current Napoli coach who played a big role in Mohamed Salah’s development while manager of Roma, has certainly been encouraged by what he has seen from the Georgian player but sounded a caution while addressing the media claiming that the player was still playing with much pressure on himself and that once he lets go that pressure then he can completely express himself and show people what he is really made of. Wow.
