8 People are Feared Dead as Their Boat Capsizes in Homa Bay

A search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in Pier beach, Homa Bay county this was after boat carrying 16 people capsized in Lake Victoria. The boat which was carrying 16 people overturned around 500 meters away from pier beach in near Homa Bay town.

The boat was traveling from Homa Bay headed to Ndhuru beach in Suba South constituency which was about 12km away from Homabay town.

Six people have so far been rescued and rushed to hospital while two others have died as a rescue operation for the remaining 8 people who are feared dead continues.

Confirming that incident, Joshua Ochogo the Homabay chief mentioned that the boat capsized about 400 metres away from Homa Bay Pier.He said the boat was headed to Nduru island in Mbita Sub-county.

Ochogo said the boat was carrying about 16 people but they have managed to rescue only 6 people.Ochogo mentioned that there were heavy rains and water hyacinth is giving them hard time to rescue the rest of the people.

He urged area residents to watch their safety first before boarding any boat claiming that all the passengers who were on board did not have life jackets.

He also said that the boat was overloaded with cement and timber.
