The FIFA World Cup Qatar has officially began with the first match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador playing at the Al Stadium. The opening ceremony of the match was one memorable one with performances from various global artists. Qatar became the first ever host nation to lose a FIFA World Cup opener, as they were convincingly outplayed on their way to a 2-0 defeat against Ecuador.
This match was dominated by Ecuador, having the highest number of possession and chance creations. Ecuador scored in the 3rd minute but the goal was disallowed for offside. They were not to be denied for long as a penalty from Valencia gave the South American team the lead.
He then added another goal for his second and his team's second through a well timed header. Ecuador now led group A with three points. Qatar are now the only host team in the world to lose the opening match.
