Manchester United was held to a one-goal draw by Southampton at the St James Park stadium this Evening. This was a very poor performance as Manchester United was very well last week against Leeds. However many have asked why the lack of consistency from a team that is looking to win titles this season. However, having watched the match there are some of the tactical mistakes that Ole Gunnar Solskjær made that led to Manchester United failing to win.
The decision to take Mason Greenwood to the left wing was very I’ll informed as Greenwood was very good while playing as a central striker last week against Leeds. The fact that Greenwood managed to score when he came into the central attacking role proves that Ole Gunnar was wrong to play him in the left flank.
Cavani who is likely to be Manchester United’s main striker is currently out as he lacks match fitness having had an extended holiday. Ole should use Mason Greenwood in a more central role especially now that Cavani and Rashford are all out.
Recalling Anthony Martial
Anthony Martial had a very poor performance in the sixth minute that he played as he did not manage to get even one shot on target. He did not threaten the Saints' defense something that led to Manchester United not forming any useful threat on goal. He often lost possession hence leading to United being on the back foot again. Ole Gunnar Solskjær should learn from this and use either Jesse Lingard or Jadon more often as Martial should be a substitute.
Dropping Scott Mctominay and replacing him with Nemanja Matic might have been one of the reasons why Manchester United had a poor performance today. Matic was slow in passing the ball and often lost possession in the middle of the pitch.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær should avoid making these mistakes again if he is to compete for trophies this season.
