UEFA: Liverpool Equals Manchester United's Record as Sadio Mane Equals Didier Drogba's Record

Liverpool equalled Manchester United's European Cup/UEFA Champions League record on Wednesday night after they hosted Villareal in the first semi-final at Anfield.

Liverpool put one leg in the Champions League final after they managed to overcome strongly defending Villareal with a 2 - 0 win.

According to OptaJoe's record, Liverpool's game against Villareal was their 12th semi-final in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League.

Only Manchester United is the other English Premier League (EPL) club that has managed to reach the semis 12 times.

"Liverpool will play in the semi-finals of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League for the 12th time this evening, equalling Manchester United (12) as the English club with the most appearances at this stage," OptaJoe revealed.

Sadio Mane equaling Chelsea legend Didier Drogba

Liverpool won the match against Villareal after Mane scored the second goal. The Senegalese received a nice pass from Mohamed Salah and put it away before the goalkeeper could get to the ball.

OptaJoe reports that Sadio's goal was his 14th goal in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages. Sadio equalled Drogba's record as the African with the most such goals in the competition’s history.

With Liverpool set to play Villareal next week, Sadio stands chance to break Drogba's record

"Sadio Mané has tonight netted his 14th goal in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, equalling Didier Drogba's record as the African with the most such goals in the competition’s history," OptaJoe revealed.
