Opinion: Raya Agrees to Move, Mendy Chooses Next Club, and Kepa’s Dilemma

Chelsea have been given a huge boost in their quest to sign Brentford’s rogue David Raya after the goalkeeper disclosed to the media that he has rejected two contract proposals. The Spaniard is hoping to hit a new ceiling next season in a bigger club and many believe that Chelsea is his ideal destination. Talks have not formally kicked off between Chelsea and the player but plans on doing so are currently underway.

“I turned down two proposals, one in January and the other one last year September. I’d don't know what the future holds for me at the moment but I trust good things will happen. The club is still deciding whether to keep me or sell me. It is a tough decision but I know they will make the best one in the end,” commented the short stopper.

Chelsea’s interest in Raya has been piqued by Mendy’s inconsistency in between the sticks. The board wants a player who can easily readjust under different systems and at the moment Potter and Mendy are not ticking. The board has also not forgotten the number of mistakes that the goalkeeper made last season. They still hold a grudge.

My opinion

Kepa is also not in the clear because once Raya is signed, he will definitely be directly shipped to the starting eleven. Because of this possibility, there is a big chance that Kepa might also switch sides Incase Chelsea make the bold move of signing Raya. Raya’s move therefore will trigger the departure of two instead of one Goalkeeper.

As per my honest opinion, I think that Chelsea should not pursue Raya. Both Mendy and Kepa are great goalkeepers and serve as good mentors to upcoming goalkeeper Gabriel Slonani. The board has to ensure that the experienced players are within arm’s length if next season they are to succeed.
