Tanui Sets New Marathon Record In Amsterdam As She Dedicates Win To The Late Tirop

Kenya's Angela Tanui set a new record as she went on to win the 2021 Amsterdam Marathon.

Breaking the previous record set by Ethiopia's Degitu Azimeraw in 2019 of 2:19:26 setting it at 2:17:57 to finish ahead of her compatriot Maureen Chepkemoi who finished second in 2:20:18.

Tanui who also trains with the newly crowned Boston Marathon Champion Diana Kipyogei dedicated her victory to the late Agnes Tirop who was found murdered in Iten. She said after the clinching victory that with the current situation of mourning Tirop, she was pushed to perform well.

Elsewhere, Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola brought Kenya's marathon dominance to an end as he broke the course record to win the Men's race in 2:3:39 leaving Kenya's men to have just one in the top three. Bernard Koech clocked 2:04:09 to finish second while Jonathan Korir (2:04:32) finished fourth as Kenneth Keter (2:06:05) and Bernard Kipyego (2:06:32) finished eighth and ninth respectively.
