Fabrizio Romano has disclosed to the public that a year ago Chelsea were planning to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma for the number one position at Chelsea, but a late recommendation for the signing of Mendy changed Chelsea’s plans. Romano said that Marina Granovskaia had planned to sign Donnarumma as a free agent but AC Milan blocked Chelsea from contacting the Italian goalkeeper because he still had a contract with them. Signing Mendy was apparently a stand-in job because initially, Granovskaia had informed Lampard that Donnarumma was the original target.
Mendy has however clutched tightly on the number one spot and it can safely be assumed that he is Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper. His quality at goal has left many in awe, with some claiming that he is among the best goalkeepers in the contemporary football world.
Romelu Lukaku’s goal drought is causing a lot of worry to Chelsea fans and neutrals alike. The Belgian has now gone 6 straight games without scoring a goal and this is threatening his reputation as a fierce goal threat. Thomas Tuchel is also puzzled by the underwhelming performance of the striker, possibly comparing him to Timo Werner who is also struggling to find the back of the net.
Could Lukaku’s goal drought be a replicate of Werner’s non-prolificacy at Chelsea? If so, then Tuchel will have to rethink his strategy of feeding the ball to the talisman because if Lukaku fails to perform, then an avalanche of attacking problems will befall Chelsea.
Pride of London
Chelsea have now set a new record as the only London club to win seven consecutive away London derby games in the English Premier League. Chelsea’s impressive run can be attributed to their solid defensive and very sharp attacking. Tuchel will be hoping to maintain the record as the season progresses and maybe even better it in the return fixtures next year.
