Premier League

Gary Cahill retires today, his record in the premier league still standing.

England international Gary Cahill has announced retirement today. It seems like he and Gerard Pique had the same thought of retiring when club football breaks for the world cup.

Many of you remember him during his time at Chelsea, where he won the champions league in his first season with them, then went on to win two Europa League titles, one league cup and two premier league titles.

He left the club as a free agent in 2019 and joined Crystal Palace. He stayed with the Eagles until 2021, then decided to spend the twilight stage of his career with AFC Bournemouth.

The record.

No player in the premier league has won all the major trophies at a shorter time than Gary Cahill. For those who don't know, the major trophies are; premier league, FA cup, league cup, Champions League and Europa League. Cahill won this trophies at a span of 3 years, from 2012 to 2015.

The centre back had a huge stroke of luck in his first season with the blues in 2012, as it was the season that the club won it's first ever Champions League title. Didier Drogba and Petr Cech were the stars of the match, the former scoring the equalising goal to put things level against Bayern Munich in the 89th minute and netting the winning penalty while the latter saving Arjen Robben's penalty deep in extra time to keep Chelsea in the game. Cech also made some saves in the penalty shootout to help his club emerge victorious.

Before this match, Chelsea had thrashed Liverpool 4-0 in the FA cup final, the nets being hit by Juan Mata, Ramirez (2 goals in 2 minutes) and Frank Lampard.

After that amazing year for the young centre back, more triumphs came to his offing in the following years.

In 2013, Chelsea won the Europa League by beating Benfica 2-1 at the Amsterdam Arena.

2014 ended trophy-less for Cahill but in 2015, he completed his trophy collection by winning the premier league and league cup. The victims in the league cup final were the trophy cursed Tottenham.

As a Chelsea fan myself, I wish Gary Cahill a happy retirement. I hope we get to see him among the Chelsea's technical staff, or even as the manager.
