Lionel Messi 'Hits the Nail on the Head' After Chelsea's Star Ballon D'or Nomination

After Chelsea's Mason Mount received a Ballon d'Or nomination, the Argentine forward's assessment on him hit the nail on the head.

The 22-year-old has evolved as one of the Blues' most significant players under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, with his achievements recently rewarded by his placement on France Football's 30-man shortlist for the sport's most prized individual accolade.

Messi has won the award a record six times and is considered the favorite to win it again, though he hinted at Mount's candidacy long before the announcement.

"From what I've seen of him, he has the potential to be one of the best," the PSG and Argentina forward remarked of the Chelsea midfielder in March 2020, just as the global epidemic began.

Mason Mount says he doesn't expect to win the Ballon d'Or this year, but being nominated with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is a "dream."

Messi and Ronaldo are largely regarded as two of the best, if not the best, players of all time, having won the prized honor 11 times each.

The Argentine striker is the favorite to win the Ballon d'Or in 2021, after finally winning an international competition with Argentina this summer in Copa America.

Messi, now at PSG, left Ronaldo off his list of contenders, but the Portugal captain was joined on the 30-man shortlist by Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes.

Mount leads an English force that includes Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane and Manchester City's Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling. Mount led Chelsea to the Champions League title and England to the Euro 2020 final.

Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United made his 181st appearance for Portugal on Saturday night, breaking the European record previously held by Spain's Sergio Ramos. Ronaldo's new record joins Iran striker Ali Daei's all-time international goals scored record, which he broke last month.
