Chelsea Star sends Senegal into the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup

Senegal defeats Ecuador 2-1 to become the first African team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

All three goals in the match were scored by English based players. Watford's winger Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring with a penalty to put Aliou Cisse's team ahead in the first half. Moises Caicedo of Brighton scored for Ecuador in the 67th minute to cancel out Senegal's lead.

Senegal advanced to the knockout stages for the third time in history three minutes later, thanks to Chelsea veteran defender Koulibally's nervous volley. Kalidou Koulibaly's winning goal made him Senegal's oldest World Cup goalscorer (31 years, 162 days), as well as the country's first ever World Cup scorer to be over 30.

Senegal is now second in Group A with six points, while Ecuador is third. With 7 points, the Netherlands lead the group. Aliou Cisse's team could face England in the knockout stages.
