Qatar are the first FIFA World Cup hosts to lose the opening match. This comes after 2-0 defeat by Ecuador in 2022 world cup match played on Sunday at Al Bayt Stadium. No host team has lost an opening match in world cup before. Qatar is the first host team to lose.
The host have been humiliated at home following a defeat in the opening match breaking the world record. Enner Valencia sealed Ecuador win with a brace in the first half which they managed to defend to the last whistle.
The host are now at the bottom of group A kick-starting their 2022 world cup campaign with a bad luck. Qatar will still have to play Netherlands and Senegal who are in the same group.
They will have to win both the two remaining games for them to secure slot in the next round of 2022 world cup campaign.
