Tens of thousands of football supporters celebrated Senegal's advancement to the Round of 16 at the current 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday, including opposition leader Raila Odinga.
After being the first team from the continent to go to the knockout round of the competition, the Lions of Teranga brought honor to Africa.
In their last Group 'A' encounter, coach Aliou Cisse's team overcame a spirited push from Ecuador to defeat the South Americans 2-1. With the win, they moved on to the next round with six points, one behind the leaders Netherlands when they defeated Qatar 2-0 to progress as well.
Odinga, the Gor Mahia team's patron and a former football player, was thrilled by Senegal's impressive performance on the field and was certain that the squad would go far in the competition.He tweeted:-
Odinga continued in a statement released by ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale, "Senegal players have demonstrated to the world that they are not a pushover, even with the injured star Sadio Mane out of the competition."
Senegal; who came in second place, will play the group 'B' winner in the Round of 16.
