CS Namwamba Hints at Kenya Bidding To Host World's Games

Ababu Namwamba, who serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, has informed the public that the government intends to submit a bid for the rights to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.

The bid made by Kenya to host the 2025 Championships, which was rejected by World Athletics due to the country's lack of adequate infrastructure, was given to the City of Tokyo, which will host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

"Kenya is prepared to present a bid for the 2029 World Championships. We cannot be a powerhouse in athletics globally and fail to bring the world to Nairobi,” Namwamba said.

Kenya's previous bid was turned down last year for the same reasons, so CS Namwamba was quick to defend the government by saying that it has a detailed plan to make sure this bid is successful.

"This time, we'll be better prepared. Namwamba added, "If our bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is successful, we can use that to help the World Athletics Championships do well."

Seb Coe, president of the World Athletics Federation, is in Kenya for high-level meetings about the sport and his annual leave vacation. He said that it was possible that Kenya would want to host the major championships.
