Estudiantes and Independiente will meet each other in the replay of the Copa de La Liga Profesional quarterfinal played in May this year. They played a goalless draw back then. Will we see a goal this time around?
Both Estudiantes and Independiente enjoyed strong runs in this year’s Copa de la Liga Profesional.
They both managed to earn the top-four finish in their respective zones (Zone A and Zone B) with an identical goal-difference in the process (16-10 in 13 matches).
They then battled it out for a place in the semifinal of the competition as Independiente advanced on penalties (4-1) after a goalless draw in the regular time.
The two outfits are about to lock horns in the second round of the 2021 Argentinean Primera Division on Sunday evening.
Estudiantes will go into the match in much higher spirits. They demolished top-flight newcomers Sarmiento Junin 0-3 on the road last weekend thanks to three goals in quick succession at the beginning of the second half.
They will fancy their chances of backing up such a positive start with another victory here, knowing that Independiente had a very tough game in Copa Sudamericana on Thursday evening.
Estudiantes have been the more successful side in this matchup historically, winning 20 and losing just 11 of 46 clashes against Independiente.
Estudiantes clinched a commanding 3-0 victory in the previous league match against Independiente on the home patch (in August 2019).
Independiente won only 5 of 24 away games against Estudiantes.
Fatigue could play a big factor here because Independiente played almost 100 minutes (eight minutes of stoppage time) three days ago against Santos. They had to chase the result from the first minute of that affair.
Also, Independiente failed to find the back of the net in their opening league fixture of the 2021 season, playing just a goalless draw at home to Argentinos Juniors. Julio Falconi’s men have thus scored only one goal in the last three games within the last ten day. Home win to nil is the way to go here in our eyes.
