Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's midfield conundrum solved, plus why a summer recoup failed

Coach Kieran Mckenna and Michael Carrick are working on a plan to transform Scott McTominay into a sole defensive midfielder with the hope that he can cover that role for a while when United revert to a 4-3-3 formation while they search for a natural one for the upcoming transfer window. But one might wonder why Manchester United did not go out and find a suitable midfielder when it was a position that everyone was pointing out as one that needed to be strengthened.

Well, the fact that Manchester United didn't get any serious bidders for Paul Pogba is one reason, as their selling Pogba would have been a sure cause for them going full force in the transfer market for a midfielder. The other reason is the fact that the Manchester United technical bench had so much hope for Van De Beek to have a huge role in United's midfield this season.

Van De Beek's physical transformation was an indication of his hunger to play, thus Manchester United coaches may have seen no need to bring in a new midfielder. Another aspect that could have limited Manchester United's capability to sign a new midfielder was the fact that they spent £133.7m on transfers and spending more than that with the impact of the CORONA Virus pandemic would have placed Manchester United in a bad position financially. All the midfield targets were pricey. Case in point, Declan Rice's transfer fee was as high as £100m.

Looking forward, Manchester United will need to correct their transfer mistoke as early as January. Some of the midfielders being eyed by Manchester United include Marcelo Brozovic of Inter Milan, Declan Rice of West Ham, Frank Kessie of AC Milan and Kalvin Philips of Leeds. If you were to pick any of these midfielders, who would you recommend to be a quick fix for Manchester United's midfield?
