Transfer LIVE: £50.6m midfielder prefers to wait for United offer to secure move – Correio da Manha

Sport Witness quotes Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha as saying that the Red Devils have entered the hunt to recruit the highly regarded 23-year-old and will face off against Manchester City across the street.

Nunes has advanced significantly since signing with Sporting. Last season, he made 50 appearances for the Primeira Liga team, scoring four goals and dishing out five assists in the process. Not only that, but he was also named the league's top midfielder on two separate occasions.

He has received seven national team caps as a result of his performance. Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle United, and Everton are just a few of the English teams keeping an eye on the dynamic playmaker in addition to both Manchester clubs.

After Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata all departed the club on free, the 20-time English champions are in dire need of midfield reinforcements. Due to the Catalan giants' serious financial situation, the transfer of De Jong from Spain has been a somewhat drawn-out process.

Sporting coach Rben Amorim has played the former Estoril player largely as a left central midfielder in a 3-4-2-1 formation at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, but he is as at ease in a deeper role.

He has been praised by many for his ability to seize the ball from the defense and use his pace to advance into the territory of the opposition. He can play a box-to-box role if necessary and has good dribbling and passing ability.

Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, praised his performances following the Citizens' Champions League Round of 16 match against the Portuguese powerhouses.

“Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today. Nunes is one of the best at the moment,” Pep was quoted as saying.

Nunes would be a lot more affordable option because of his purported £50 million release clause. Sporting would be willing to accept a player on loan and lower the price by an additional £10 million, allowing for a much more affordable transaction.

Having acquired Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes from the 19-time Premier League champions in the past, the Red Devils continue to have a positive connection with them. With the arrival of Fernandes, Alex Telles, Victor Lindelof, and Diogo Dalot from Portugal, the English club has recently been a hot market.

The media, however, has a propensity to associate every talent that comes out of there with the team from Old Trafford. Erik Ten Hag is closely monitoring the situation, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few days.
