Odegaard On the Verge of Being Another "Willian" Flop (Opinion)

Martin Odegaard faces the risk of being dubbed the flop of the summer if hus recent performances are anything to go by. The Norwegian attacker has barely been active in the attacking department and this saw him being benched ahead of a lively Alexander Lacazette. Mikel Arteta’s patience with the midfield maestro is slowly wearing out as he expects more from Odegaard than what the Norwegian is offering to the club.

His dreadful display yesterday did not miss the attention of the fans who criticized him for his slow reaction to track back and prevent Aston Villa’s goal. It is not going to be easy for him considering that Lacazette is also knuckling down and working even harder to squeeze himself into the first team. Odegaard needs to awaken his attacking instincts and visionary passing before he comes another “Willian” at the club.

However, his exclusion from yesterday’s starting eleven could mean that he might be in contention to start next week’s game against Leeds United. Arteta is fond of leaving clues for players who are likely to start subsequent games. If this is the case, then he still has a chance to improve his contribution to the team’s success this season. Leeds United are a tough team and it goes without saying that defeating them will be an uphill task that will require resilience and strong minds to pull through the game.

When Odegaard joined the club, he mentioned that he was not focused on individual accomplishments but on collective successes meant to progress the club’s reputation. He also said that he believes in the coach and the vision outlined by Arteta for the club as he had sworn his allegiance to the club together with its belief.

His commitment to what he had pledged to uphold at the club is under serious scrutiny and unless he gets a grip of the reforms at the club, he will most likely derail from the club’s expectations which will result in his exclusion from the team’s plans for this season. He was signed over James Madison in the summer, but is he living up to the quality of the Leicester City man? Share your thoughts below.
