

The World Cup opening ceremony was done at Al Sayyd Stadium, with Jung Kook of BTS performing the opening theme song. American celebrity Morgan Freeman headlined a presentation while Marcel Desailly presented the World Cup trophy after winning it back in 1998 with France.




Qatar hosted Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium which has a capacity of 60K fans for Group A opener. Ener Valencia thought he had scored an opener for Ecuador in the 3rd minute but the goal was disallowed due to offside after Video Assistant Review. Valencia finally scored the opener in the 16th minute through a penalty before scoring an header in the 31st minute aftee being assisted by Preciado to seal all the 3 points. The intensity dropped in the second half with Qatar threatening to score but they all wasted the chances hence becoming the first World Cup host to lose their opening fixture. Following the 2-0 win, Ecuador climbed up to position 1 in the 2022 World Cup Group A table with 3 points while Qatar anchor the table with 0 points.
