It’s derby day in Austrias this Saturday. This is one of Spain’s biggest derby matches and one of the fiercest rivalries that exists between two teams that don’t share the same city. It’s only 30 km between Gijon and Oviedo and it’s possible this may be the final derby for some time with Sporting pushing for promotion and Real Oviedo in mild danger of getting sucked into the relegation scrap.
Sporting will start as favourites but perhaps not massive ones. Their form hasn’t been great of late and they come into this game on the back of successive defeats which have effectively ended their hopes of clinching automatic promotion this year. The 2-1 loss to Mirandes last time out at El Molinon would have been particularly tough to take as it ended what was a 16-game unbeaten home record in LaLiga SmartBank this season.
A 1-0 defeat at Tenerife last time out added to the sense that this is a team that is still a bit short on the kind of attacking quality needed to win promotion. Their goal tally of 35 in 34 games is not what you expect from a team in the top six and it’s extraordinarily poor when you consider they actually have the top scorer in the Segunda Division in the shape of Uroš Đurđević who has scored 60% of his team’s goals this term.
