Raila donates KSh 500k to Wisdom Naya, a former Sofapaka player who is battling cancer

Raila Odinga, a presidential candidate, has donated KSh 500,000 to Wisdom Naya, a former Sofapaka player who is facing amputation due to cancer.

The 18-year-old midfielder signed a three-year contract with Batoto Ba Mungu during the January transfer window of 2019. Before Kenya's tier one league was halted as part of the COVID-19 control measures, Nayah, who was named best player at the 2018 Copa Coca-Cola youth competition, played a handful of games for the club.

During this time, Nayah realized something wasn't quite right when practicing alone, and a series of tests revealed that she had a thigh tumor called Soft Tissue Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer. His family requested financial assistance from well-wishers earlier this month, as medical expenditures had depleted their resources, with physicians at Mediheal Hospital recommending amputation as one of the top alternatives.

During a political rally in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), donated KSh 500,000 to the ill midfielder's treatment. After a group of teenagers from Nayah's neighborhood came to his rally with placards begging for help for the young player, the handshake partner promised assistance.
