Graham Potter has today break silence over Mendy missing in a number of Chelsea games even after the Senegalese had been granted the first team priority with former manager Thomas Tuchel. Potter found Kepa Arrizabalaga who was handed the second team chance with Tuchel fit to start as Chelsea goalkeeper after he was appointed as head coach.
According to him, he need a competitive team where each player is given a chance to play and in any case where a player makes major mistake, he should be dropped and replaced immediately before things worsen. "We need to learn to work hard and compete for our position. No one is guaranteed a chance to be featured in the first team but hardworking and commitment. We also work on changing our general mistakes which can cost the whole team by giving a player time to evaluate himself before getting another chance to play".
30-year old Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy has found it difficult to get into Chelsea starting XI under Graham Potter after unsuccessful beginning of 2022/23 season. Mendy has missed several Premier League matches including the match against Crystal Palace as well as Champions League clashes over Red Bull Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb but was still not selected for Chelsea’s last three matches.
Mendy’s perfy had been under question following the previous matches before the injury after making a number of mistakes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Leeds United as well as the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur with some observers calling for him to be dropped in starting XI. He need to have time to rebuild his performance and learn from the mistake before getting the chance to play again.
