Elizabeth Wathuti, a climate, and environmental activist has been named to TIME magazine's 2022 TIME100 Next list, which recognizes 100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future of various industries and sectors around the world.
This year's list was divided into five categories: Artists, Phenomena, Innovators, Leaders, and Advocates.
Wathuti was featured alongside other international acts such as Tiktok sensation Khaby Lame and NBA player Ja Morant, to name a few.
Wathuti, the only Kenyan on the list, first gained international attention in November 2021 when she delivered a speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow about how Kenyans are being battered by climate change.
"Her strong promotion on the global stage has brought to the world's attention the environmental influences that have previously wrecked her country of origin, Kenya, and various nations across the African landmass," TIME said in a statement.
"Elizabeth leads significant grassroots work at home in Kenya, where she is the Pioneer behind the Green Age Drive (GGI), a tree-development drive enlivened by crafted by the late Nobel Laureate Teacher Wangari Maathai, and she is additionally the Establishing Overseer of the African Youth Environment Pioneers Center point at the late Nobel laureate's establishment."
Wathuti expressed happiness that her activism efforts, as well as those of other environmental change activity champions, were not falling through the cracks.
"It is an honor to be remembered for the current year's TIME100 Next list. Today, I'd like to highlight the enthusiastic efforts of my global youth environment development colleagues, who are also fighting tirelessly for a secure future "She stated.
"We are a never-ending development of millions, and we will not tire; we will get change going."
