Reigning Copa America champions Argentina cruised to a well deserved 4-3 penalty shootout victory against a relentless Netherlands outfit in the quarter finals of the 2022 world Cup.
The La Albiceleste had a brilliant start to the match & they deservedly broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Nahuel Molina who was assisted by skipper Lionel Messi. The seven times balloon d'or winner got on the act himself in the 74th minute with a well taken penalty kick to give his side a healthy 2-0 lead, however 2nd half substitute Wout Weghorst scored a remarkable brace to send the game to extra time.
After an intense 30 minutes of extra time which both sides failed to find the winner, the match proceeded to penalties. Dutch captain Virgil Vin dijk & Steven Berghuis saw their efforts saved by Emiliano Martinez, whilst Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes, Gonzalo Montiel & Lautaro Martinez succefully converted their spot kicks to give Argentina the vital victory & they are now set to battle it out with Croatia on Tuesday for a place in the final of the elite tournament.
