Winning the UEFA Champions League is the dream of every player who plays in European football. The trophy is considered the best and most precious title under club level and the second highest in football behind World Cup

Most of the great players have won the big trophy while others ended their careers without winning any. Some of the most successful players in the competition are Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Francisco Gento, Paolo Maldini, Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric among others.

However, there are others who had a successful career winning league titles and even the World Cup but the won the Champions League. Here is a XI of greatest players to never win in the big stage.

Goalkeeper-Gianluigi Buffon

The Italian goalkeeper is one of the players with the longest active years in football. He has played for over 20 years in football playing mostly at Juventus but has also played for Paris Saint-Germain and Parma.

He has played in several finals for Juventus in 2003, 2015 and 2017 losing in all the three. He has had a successful career for club and country winning the World Cup and league title bu never managed the champions league despite still active at 43 years old.

Right-back-Lilian Thuram

This is another Juventus player who never managed to win the big stage who was among the squad that los in 2003 final to AC Milan in the shoot outs. He has 69 appearances for the Turin side in the UEFA Champions League in his career. Despite failing in the Champions League he has won the Word Cup in 1998 and Euros in 2000.

Centre-back-Laurent Blanc

The French international played for some big clubs in Europe including Manchester United, Barcelona and AC Milan but he never got to touch the trophy. All these clubs have these three clubs are Champions League winners several times but he didn't get lucky to win it.

Fabio Cannavaro was an integral part in the Italian side that won the 2006 word cup. Like most of the players in this list Cannavaro won trophies at International level but failed in the UCL.

He played for Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus which are among the European superpowers but he fell short in each club. He further he reached in the Champions League was in the semifinals with Inter Milan in 2003.

Left-back-Gianluca Zambrotta

Zambrotta was unlucky while he was at Camp Nou when Barcelona was in dry spell.of trophies. However, he enjoyes a successful career at Juventus and AC Milan but missed out UEFA Champions League glory like most of the great Italian players.

Central midfield-Michael Ballack

The German great failed to win trophies while he was playing for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. He lost in major final with Leverkusen including the Champions League and also the World Cup with Germany.

He then moved to Bayern Munich and win several trophies, he then moved to west London club Chelsea where he lost the Champions League final with Blues in 2008 to Manchester United.

Midfielder-Lothar Matthaus

Mathaus was also a World Cup winner with some good personal accolades including European player of the year and German player of the year, World player of the year among others.

He never won the Champions League and he was in Bayern Munich's team that lost on 1999 final to Manchester United. His team was two minutes away from becoming Champions of Europe but United overturned the scores with gaosl form Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham.

Midfielder-Pavel Nedved

The Czech international is regarded as one of ghw greatest midfielders of all time have played for Juventus like most players on the list. Nedved had 100 appearances in the Champions League but missed out non lifting the trophy. He didn't feature in 2003 final for Juventus due to suspension.

Forward-Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The current AC Milan forward has played in seven teams that have played in the Champions League and six of them have ever won it.He has played in Ajax, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Manchester United, AC Milan anf Juventus but he didn't win the big stage.

Gabriel Batistuta was one of the best strikers in football during the 1990s. The Argentine great was impressive in the UEFA Champions League with goals but didn't make it far in fhe competition.

Ronaldo is one of the greatest strikers in football and one of the best South Americans who played in European football. Even though he had some serious injuries in his career which affected his game much he was stunning goal scorer.
