Arsenal: Arteta Sets New Record in EPL, Martinelli Closes Gap on Saka, and Nelson’s Contract Talks

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal this season have been having a fairy tale campaign, but it has been nothing less than what the fans expect from the ever green young squad. According to sources, the Gunners have made history by having the most number of goals scored by players at/under the age of 21 years this season (20). Their closest pursuers in that category is Leeds United who have 8, followed by Southampton (5).

“I’ve said It before and I’ll say it again, Arteta having the youngest squad in the league never set precedence for him to fail in the league. There were many tongues wagging at the start of the season that Arsenal will fall because of their young players and their lack of experience. Now they can hardly back up that claim,” remarked Ian Wright.

Gabriel Martinelli has now scored in two consecutive matches for the Gunners after a goalless run of 7 games. His winner against Leicester City now tallies his goals to 8, just one shy of Bukayo Saka who has 9 goals in the Premier League this season. The healthy competition between the two wingers in terms of goal count clearly show that Arsenal are hungry in the offensive third.

My opinion

Another young player who fans are looking forward to taking the world stage by storm is Reiss Nelson. The 24 year old is currently on the sidelines after returning from injury but it is only a matter of time until he is given proper minutes on the pitch. His current contract runs down at the end of the season but hopes that between now and then he is given a new contract.

Arsenal’s title charge this season is clearly in the hands of the young players in the squad. The impact signings of Jorginho and Trossard in January have also proven to be positives in the squad because the last two wins have been because of the two experienced players. Now that that experience is perfectly blended with youth in the starting eleven, Arsenal are more clearly favorites to win the title this season.
