The Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon is back after its cancellation in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Addressing the press outside Inyanja Plaza before flagging off the county heroes, Culture and Sports Executive, Dr Janet Manyasi said the department was serious on matters sports, assuring the runners of their unwavering support.
"You are our real heroes who have been training dailing for the gruelling event despite many challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic. The event is not about competing but to maintain peace, cohesion and valuing diversity.
She added: " Disability is not inability; you should carry the county's flag high by aiming for podium finish to lift the image of the County and country. I wish you the best of luck in your quest for exellence."
" Sports is health and wealth. It's our number one clarion call," she said, assuring the sports fraternity that they have allocated funds in the 2021/2022 budget to give Busia Stadium a facelift," she said.
Chief Officer, Joe Maurice Odundo said the county was given only two slots in the tricycle race because of the coronavirus pandemic with runners who will miss the physical race encouraged to participate in the virtual race that started today to October 30th, 2021.
Obiero said he will strive to finish on his third podium finish in 2017 by returning in top position, adding that their success in Nairobi will help spur sports in the county.
Kandira said he has participated in the event three times finishing third and fifth respectively, noting that he will strive to better that performance this time round.
