Manchester United host Aston Villa this afternoon at Old Trafford. United are currently third in the standings; equal on points with Chelsea and Liverpool. The top two have a superior goal difference.
Should Manchester United aim to finish this weekend at the top of the table, they would need to do a few things. United have an impressive head-to-head record against Aston Villa. Out of the 52 matches, United have won 37 and only lost 3.
The first thing Manchester United need to get is a win (3+ goals) and a clean sheet while at it. This will instantly propel them to the top.
However, there is a trivial flaw in United's team; they have conceded four goals out of their last five games. That easily means a goal is conceded in almost every match. The backline of Shaw, Maguire, Varane and Wan-Bissaka still needs a lot of working out.
For today, they will have to tighten their defence and minimalise errors that easily lead to goals. This will enable them to close the gap on their competitors.
Bear in Mind that Chelsea and Man City will also be playing at the same time. If Chelsea win with a goal difference of +1, then Manchester United will still be guaranteed top of the table.
