Coming into this transfer window, Arsenal were poised to sign a central midfielder who would complement Partey and Odegaard in the Arsenal midfield: Youri Tielemans has been heralded as this for days.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with the Belgian international, but no deal has been struck. Many Arsenal fans are interested in Tielemans, but former Gunner Paul Merson believes he is not what the club needs. Merson believes Arteta should be looking at James Ward Prowse rather than Tielemans.
"I don’t understand why Arsenal are not pulling out all the stops to try and take James Ward-Prowse from Southampton," writes Merson in the Daily Star (via Caught Offside).
"Arsenal need to buy experience and they would be buying an experienced England international who knows the Premier League and would make a huge difference to them."
But why Ward Prowse? Merson adds, "Ward-Prowse ticks every box. He is deadly from free kicks. Puts it on a sixpence from corners. What am I missing? Is it because he’s English and only plays for Southampton? I don’t get it."
Would you consider James Ward Prowse over Tielemans if you were Arteta?
