WU20: Mutunga wins silver for Kenya 400m

After running her Personal Best of 52.60 in Heat 2, Kenya’s Damaris Nduleve Mutunga beat a stellar field of athletes as she bagged silver in the World Under 20 Championships 400m.

Mutunga went even one better in the final as she ran a National World Under 20 Championships record at a time of 51.71, just missing out on the gold by microseconds.

The gold was claimed by pre-race favorite Yemi Mary John who cut the tape at a time of 51.50 to register her Personal Best as he looked composed on the track.

John was the only sub 52 seconds runner on the field before the race as Mutunga's 52.29 Personal Best pitted her as the third-fastest in the race.

So confident was John of the title that she came into the stadium with a tiara and handed it over to her team before taking to the track and rightfully dawned it after cruising to victory.

Mutunga had some energy left in her reserves to push to a second-place finish but her final kick was not enough to catch John.

India’s Rupa claimed bronze in the race at a time of 51.85 which marked her Personal Best with Norwegian Henriette Jæger setting a National World Under 20 Championships record in 52.23 to finish fourth.
