Messi topped the list for a brief period before Cristiano Ronaldo reclaimed his spot. Cristiano Ronaldo has overtaken Messi and gone back to his number one spot. According to Forbes, Cristiano Ronaldo is now the highest earning footballer. The 36 year old will earn around $125 million before taxes.

$70 million of this figure will be from his salary and bonuses for his return to Manchester United. The Portuguese will then earn around $55 million from personal endorsements and partnerships. PSG star Messi will be the second highest earning player. He will earn around $110 million through this campaign. His contract with PSG is worth $75 million and the Argentine will get $35 million from brand such as Adidas, Pepsi and Budweiser. He signed a three year contract with this brands last year. Ronaldo is currently enjoying life at the theatre of dreams while Messi's career at PSG is yet to takeoff.

Messi is used to having a slow start of the season the picking up as the season unfolds. Will this time be different? Time will surely tell.
