I don't know how Southampton keep doing it but they do. The Nathan Jones appointment may not have worked out but he was the right profile of coach, as is Rubén Sellés. They have done an amazing job of replacing Hasenhüttl. There's few coaches who coach compact 4-4-2 presses.
But Sellés is exactly that thus far during his time at the club, and he adapted it to deal with United's 3-1-6 build-up superbly. The front 2 pressed United's centre backs whilst covering the passing lane into Casemiro where JWP stepped high and the block man-marked everywhere.
United couldn't deal with it particularly effectively, & although criticism has been levelled at Casemiro's technical security under the press, it cannot be ignored that he had literally no help whatsoever in midfield against an ultra compact press.
Every player would struggle.
The Premier League is just so damn good. The fact that a team with such a compact block and players like Sulemana, Kyle Walker-Peters, Ward-Prowse, Roméo, Lavia, & Bella-Kotchap are in 20th place is wild.
Of course they were handicapped by Jones for a while but they can stay up.
The problem is, though, is that the level at the bottom of the league is so high, so nobody can say with certainty they'll stay up.
The fact that West Ham, Leicester City, Wolves, Palace, etc, can all be dragged into the race at this stage is wild.
The league is just special..
