England manager Gareth Southgate has this evening, 26 March, confirmed the departure of another start following surgery, just a few hours before their match against Ukraine.
England is set to host Ukraine for their second match of the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier but the squad has suffered a huge blow after the withdrawal of Manchester City attacker Phil Foden.
According to reliable sources from the United Kingdom this Sunday, Phil Foden has been ruled out of this evening’s UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier with Ukraine following surgery to remove his appendix this morning.
Foden (C) and team mates
Foden played less than 20 minutes in their opening match away in Italy, in which they recorded a crucial 2 -1 win.
He was introduced in the 69th minute of the match before he was sacrificed by the coach to pave way for another defender after Luke Shaw had been shown a red card.
Sources have said England manager Gareth Southgate has not called up Foden's replacement. This means the three lions are going to rely on 20 players who are fit to take part in the match.
It should be noted that earlier on, England also announced the withdrawal of Reece James who sustained an injury after he was given some minutes in their match against Italy.
Manchester United Luke Shaw is not available for selection following his suspension. He was sent off after picking a second yellow in their match against Italy.
England has since tweeted wishing Phil Foden a quick recovery.
"An update from the #ThreeLions camp, as @PhilFoden has been ruled out of today's #EURO2024 qualifier with Ukraine following surgery to remove his appendix this morning. Get well soon, Phil," read an update from England.
England will be playing Ukraine at exactly 7 pm local time.
